The Philips Norelco QT4070 is a sturdy, masculine beard and mustache trimmer that allows the smooth transition from one length setting to the next. It has an onboard vacuum that makes it a convenient solution to have a quick trim almost anywhere. Its rapid-charging Lithium Ion batteries require only a one-hour charge to last through 50 minutes of shaving.
Philips Norelco QT4070 Beard Trimmer
Under the Hood The Philips Norelco QT4070 comes in the box with just the trimmer, te charging adapter and a cleaning brush. That’s it! No gadgets and gizmos to speak off, because everything that the Philips Norelco QT4070 can do, it does from the inside. The first thing that caught my attention with the Philips Norelco QT4070 is that it comes with a powerful vacuum that does a good job of catching at least 95% of all the shavings that come out of a session.
There is a turbo button just above the power switch and if you flip that on, not only does the blade get into high gear, so does the vacuum. With the increased power the vacuum does even better. I like the fact that I can shave at my desk just before a late evening meeting and look like I did at 9am that morning.
The next thing I like is the multi function indicator. It leaves no room for ambiguity. With just one glance I am able to get a full summary of all I need – the length setting and the charge in the battery. It’s a handsome display too. The blades on the trimmer are the star of the entire ensemble.
It is maintenance-free with no need to oil the blades, this is always a plus in my book. Not having to oil the blades means I do not have to put up with my whiskers smelling like mineral oil, a feature my significant other definitely appreciates as well.
Self Sharpening Blades
The blades are self sharpening and are advertised as staying sharp for the life of the trimmer, we’ve not been able to verify this but have certainly had no issues with them staying as sharp as when they were bought after 100′s of uses. The other thing about that turbo button I mentioned earlier, is that it’s not just good for the vacuum. It works great for upping the power of the blades as well. If you have a rather thick growth, the extra power in turbo mode will get you sorted.
I like that I can choose the length settings with the Philips Norelco QT4070 and lock it into place from 1 mm to 18mm. I can even set the length to as low as 0.5mm which is about 1/64th of an inch. If its hard to imagine that length, look at it this way – it’s like a 5 o’clock shadow. Portability and weight are also a feature that is part of the trimmer.
The 50-minute charge held by the Lithium Ion batteries is sufficient to last me during my travel. In that case there is no need to lug my charger along. 50 minutes of charge can take me through 10 days, maybe 12 at times, of daily use. I am hardly away longer than that. The unit is also rather lightweight. There is neither strain nor discomfort when wielding the Philips Norelco QT4070 across my face, and its ability to follow the terrain of my face with its unique comb, makes shaving a breeze.
PROS of the Philips Norelco QT4070 Trimmer
There are a few things that I really appreciate in this model. The first is the advance vacuum system that comes with a turbo boost. I only use the turbo when I am not within the convenience of my own bathroom. The shavings are there in a see-through compartment so you can clean it out when the time calls for it. Cleaning out the shavings is also easy to do and that makes using the vacuum a real pleasure.
The contour-following comb is a great design feature that completely simplifies the entire experience. I recall using other trimmers that do not have this feature, I’d have to go over the same spot more than twice just because it was around bend or corner. I never realized the benefit of the contour-following combs, but now I don’t see myself going back to the regular beard guards.
The ability to trim with cordless or with the cord tethering to the wall is a handy feature. It allows you to still get a trim even if you’ve not had a chance to charge it. It is easy to think that most trimmers do that, but they don’t.
Downside of the Philips Norelco QT4070
The downside of the whole experience is the fact that there is no dual voltage on this model. I haven’t come across a time when that has caused me any inconvenience but it just nags me at the back of my mind that what if I had to use one at a foreign hotel? I realize it’s a trivial matter, but a gripe of mine, nonetheless.
The other downside about this is that I am unable to trim in the shower nor am I able to wash this out with water. I am not sure for the reason behind this, but it’s one of those things that took me a while to get used to. When I bought it I had mistakenly assumed that it was washable. Only after going through the instructions did I realize my error. I almost returned it but since I liked the way it felt in my hands and the way the motors were powerful enough to cut my thickish stubble, I kept it. Now I am used to it. I hope by the time I decide to get a new one they upgrade this model to make it watertight.
Overall I like the Philips Norelco QT4070 for the quality and the features it serves up. It is on the more expensive side of personal trimmers but it is a long term investment. There is no clanging and plastic feel to it, rather it exudes an air of grooming confidence. Even the seeming dislikes I once harbored have vanished as I have come to depend on my Philips Norelco QT4070.
